Vítězslava Kaprálová

Vítězslava Kaprálová (1915 – 1940)
January
Song on the poem by Vítězslav Nezval
for soprano (or tenor), flute, two violins, violoncello and piano
(ed. Timothy Cheek)

The surrealist poem Leden (January) from Nezval’s poetry collection Zpáteční lístek (Return Ticket) was the inspiration behind one of the most remarkable Czech songs of the first half of the twentieth century. In Leden Kaprálová masterfully captured the unique atmosphere of Nezval’s lyrics full of decadent imagery and odd melancholy. She further enhanced the haunting quality of this piece with unusual instrumentation: flute, two violins, violoncello, and piano. The composition is published here for the first time. Its historical, first edition has been made possible thanks to the encouragement and financial support of the Kapralova Society, an arts organization based in Toronto, Canada.

Vítězslava Kaprálová (1915 – 1940)
Five Piano Compositions
(ed. Věroslav Němec)

In the fall of 1930, the then fifteen-year-old Kaprálová began to study composition under Vilém Petrželka at the Brno Conservatory. Between February 1931 and January 1932, she composed her first work of significance, which she entitled Five Piano Compositions. The five „compositions,“ or rather movements, are full of lyricism. They are in fairly slow tempi and their harmonic language is so rich and colorful that a few years later, Kaprálová decided to orchestrate the first four as Suite en miniature. This historical, first edition of Five Piano Compositions, published by AMOS EDITIO, is made possible thanks to the financial support of the Kapralova Society.

Songs
Complete edition
voice (soprano or tenor) and piano
(ed. Timothy Cheek)

Kaprálová’s contribution to the genre of art song is a major one; yet her legacy was fairly unknown until very recently. It was only in 2003, when Supraphon released the CD premiere recording of these songs, that their extraordinary qualities were brought to the attention of music critics and led to her reputation of being one of the most important composers of the art song of the twentieth century. This publication is the first complete (and critical) edition of Kaprálová’s songs, many of which have not been previously published. The bilingual edition was meticulously prepared for publication by one of the foremost Kaprálová scholars, Dr. Timothy Cheek of the University of Michigan School of Music. Besides the knowledgeable Foreword and substantial editorial notes, the edition includes translation of all lyrics into English. This unique publishing project was made possible thanks to the encouragement and financial assistance of the Kapralova Society, a music society based in Toronto, Canada.

Tales of a Small Flute
Two little pieces
for recorder or flute and piano
(ed. Věroslav Němec)

In the spring of 1940, Kaprálová decided to compose three little pieces to expand the repertoire of her fiancé Jiří Mucha, an amateur recorder player. At the end, she was able to finish only two of them, however. As is evident from their autograph score, Kaprálová intended them to be playable by both recorder and flute. Despite the freshness of these little musical gems full of imagination, none of them has been published – until today. Their first edition was made possible thanks to the support of The Kapralova Society.

Vítězslava Kaprálová (1915 – 1940)
Pieces from Childhood
(ed. Věroslav Němec)

This is a first edition of eight piano compositions from Kaprálová’s childhood, written by the composer between the age of nine and twelve. This collection of piano miniatures will be of an interest to musicians not only as a unique historical document but it will also impress them with its unquestionable quality. Besides children’s miniatures, in which the little composer often utilizes tone-painting (In the Realm of Fables, The Harbour, War) we will also find in this collection compositions that are unusually profound at such a tender age (Setting Out on a Long Journey, Pondering, Longing, Valse triste, After the Battle on White Mountain). Their rich melodic and harmonic language and the depth of emotional expression point to unusual creative gifts of a young composer, her abundant fantasy, and her intelligence. The childhood compositions are not technically demanding and a few of them can be performed by young students as early as in their second grade.

Compositions for violin and piano
Complete edition
(ed. Timothy Cheek, Stephen Shipps)

The edition includes three compositions: Legend, Burlesque, and Elegy. The Legend and the Burlesque (numbered op. 3/1 and op. 3/2) were both composed in 1932, during Kaprálová’s studies at the Brno Conservatory; the Elegy was composed in the memory of Czech writer Karel Čapek in the spring of 1939. While the Burlesque was published as early as 1933, the Legend and the Elegy have never been published – until now. All three works are now being offered in a first ever complete edition – a project initiated and financially assisted by the Kapralova Society. The publication’s editor is one of the foremost Kaprálová scholars, Dr. Timothy Cheek, of the University of Michigan School of Music; the violin part was edited by another member of the faculty, Dr. Stephen Shipps. Almost simultaneously with the print edition, all three works have also been recorded and are available on compact disc released by the largest independent US label, Koch Records.

Sad Evening
(ed. Timothy Cheek)

In 2006, while browsing through Kaprálová Papers deposited in the Music History Department of the Moravian Museum in Brno, Karla Hartl came across an autograph of a previously unknown Kaprálová song, entitled Smutný večer (Sad evening). It is not only the music but also the text of the song, likely written by the composer herself, which makes this find so interesting. We have no doubt that this edition of Sad Evening, prepared for publication by Kaprálová scholar Timothy Cheek, Associate Professor of Voice at the University of Michigan, will make a valuable contribution to the body of knowledge about Kaprálová’s oeuvre, in which art song holds such a prominent place. The project was initiated and financially assisted by the Kapralova Society.

Sonata Appassionata, op. 6
(ed. Věroslav Němec)

The two-movement Sonata appassionata is Kaprálová’s first major piano work. What was already obvious to those present at its premiere in 1934, has been only confirmed by time: this is a composition of exceptional quality and without doubt one of the most remarkable works of the Czech piano literature of the first half of the twentieth-century. Despite its considerable merit, the composition was not previously published. This first, critical edition was made possible thanks to the Kapralova Society, an arts organization based in Toronto, Canada.

Three Piano Pieces, Op. 9
Grotesque Passacaglia
(ed. Věroslav Němec)

The two works by Kaprálová, included in this publication, have much in common. In October 1935, Kaprálová embarked on her studies under Vítězslav Novák at the Prague Conservatory. Her first accomplishment was Grotesque Passacaglia, a composition for piano with which the self-assured young composer entered a competition of the contemporary music journal Tempo. The work placed first in the competition, and, as a result, it was published the following year. On Novák’s advice, however, Kaprálová further revisited the score, finalizing it under the title of Scherzo Passacaglia. This revised (mainly expanded) work was included with two compositions that followed – Prelude and Crab Canon – in Three Piano Pieces, op. 9. Unlike the Grotesque Passacaglia, however, these remarkable pieces remained for a long time unpublished, and they are being made available for the first time in our edition. This project was initiated and financially assisted by the Kapralova Society.
